Whether you go for real or fake, the Christmas tree has always been a festive centrepiece. This year, quirky and retro are leading the trends. Check out John Lewis’s Sugar and Spice look, which is all about bright and bold colours for a vibrant scheme that will make you smile. Think retro nostalgia combined with maximalism: the battenberg and disco ball cherries are popular choices. Other top looks include warm golds, classic black and white and geometric patterns. Oversized baubles are also having a moment. Meanwhile, pre-lit trees take all the hassle out of wrapping all the lights around the tree.

If there is one time of year when you can really go to town on the table, it’s Christmas. Lay a simple white linen cloth, decide on your colour scheme and pick accessories in the same hue. Or go all over metallic, adding in gold, silver, and even a dramatic copper. A popular theme this year is a natural look with foliage, wood and woodland touches such as toadstools and pine cones. Wreaths and hanging foliage are not just on the door but above the dining table, too. And don’t forget your eco-friendly crackers.
