It’s that time of year again when you start to see Fair Isle jumpers dotting the high street. Gorgeous, stylish and cosy at the same time, these timeless jumpers are almost synonymous with the festive season and have a cyclical staying power. The ultimate piece for a snug winter aesthetic, they’re perfect for either cosying up by the fire with a book and some piping hot chocolate, or styling with some chic flared jeans, buckle boots and a scarf for an outdoorsy style that’ll have you feeling like the main character in a classic British Christmas film.

Named after an isle in Shetland, the knits are certainly as quintessentially British as you could possibly get. The name refers to a knitting technique used to create patterns with multiple colours – which is how you get the iconic pattern that pops up every winter.

This year they’re more popular than ever: visitors to Paris Fashion Week would have spotted the classic pattern being sported by models and spectators alike. Molly Goddard, who have become almost synonymous with Fair Isle, have released their yearly catalogue of the knits, and while the trend tends to favour the classic style with neutral tones, it’s also been given a chic update, with brighter colours dominating the seasonal look.
