Autumn restaurant openings and news

There’s so much happening in London and Surrey right now. Here’s what got our attention…

Pictured: The Ox, Clapham

The Ox, Clapham

New gastropub The Ox will be arriving on Clapham High Street on 14 October. The emphasis is on providence with beef and lamb supplied by livestock from the family farm in the Scottish Borders, and dry aged on site. Dishes include the likes of fillet of Scottish Luing beef with smoked eel and salt baked celeriac. There is 50% off food during its soft launch, until 3 November.

Rosa’s Thai, Kingston

Rosa’s Thai is opening its doors in Kingston on 21 October. The menu includes the likes of spicy drunken noodles, ‘som tum’ papaya salad and pad Thai, as well as Thai-inspired cocktails such as dragon star martinis. Guests who visit during soft launch (7 to 20 October inclusive) can get 50% off their food bill.

Incredible food for a celebratory feast

Sale e Pepe’s white truffle menu

Sale e Pepe has been a Knightsbridge institution since 1974, and it has just had a gorgeous refurb for its birthday. We tried the new season white truffle menu and it really is special, with starters including beef carpaccio with shavings of the prized truffle. A risotto, a tagliatelle and rib-eye steak are also similarly adorned. Catch the truffles at their seasonal best until mid December.

The Albert, Kingston

This large pub, which dates back to 1855, has just had a big refurb and is back open with a smart new look. Pub favourites are on the menu, with burgers and roasts alongside dishes such as guinea fowl rillette and ox cheek and ale pie.

Delicious dishes to make right now

Tamila, Battersea

From Islington’s The Tamil Prince, Tamila offers dosa and curries in a casual spot, alongside cocktails such as a gunpowder margarita and Tamil negroni.

Starling, Esher

Nick Beardshaw, Great British Menu winner and former Tom Kerridge head chef, opened his new venture in August and it is fabulous. We went for lunch in early October and were wowed by dishes such as herb crumbed cod cheek with tartare sauce and the most wonderful duck with cherry ketchup and leg croustillant. The interiors are smart and its fun to watch the action in the open kitchen.

Il Mercato at La Trattoria by Alfredo Russo, Kensington

Tucked in The Pelham, La Trattoria has a great ‘market menu’ on every 1st and 3rd Thursday of the month, where diners can choose from a vast table full of Italian goodies, including homemade focaccia, Italian charcuteries and gorgeous cheeses.

Bread Ahead, Battersea

Doughnut and bakery masters Bread Ahead have opened in Battersea Power Station. Don’t miss their crème brulee doughnut, which has acquired cult status, alongside the more traditional flavours.
