Lucy Kane checks out an alpine wellness hotel where your wellbeing takes priority
Steeped in alpine traditions, pristine nature and mountain vistas, Hubertus hotel nestles tranquilly in the Allgau valley. With 360-degree views of Bavarian alpine mountains, there are a host of healthy outdoor activities on the doorstep, a programme of fitness and wellbeing classes and a sumptuous spa for unwinding and deep relaxation.
Family-owned by four generations, you’ll often meet members of the family during your stay, proudly wearing their traditional dress. Father and son duo Karl and Marc share their passion for local cuisine and lead hikes in the mountains, Christa brings a spiritual energy and even the youngest member of the family helps, serving dinner at weekends.
Active Wellbeing
The fully kitted out gym overlooking a courtyard fern garden will get you motivated into action. Unique to this part of the world is some beautiful mountain strength-building equipment for a full body workout. You can combine this with one of the many excellent fitness classes such as fascia training. Or you can head outdoors for your fitness: having grown up in the area, Marc leads hikes and Karl takes groups out exploring elevations on electric bikes. Gentler options include food foraging and herbalist walks.
Contemporary Spa
A show-stopping outdoor natural cold-water pool provides a segue from the hotel to the extensive contemporary spa. With loungers and mountain views you could be forgiven for stopping here. But you’ll be well-rewarded by venturing further and stepping into the indoor-outdoor pool surrounded by rocking recliners and mountain views. Close to the Austrian border, they know how to sauna here. Once you acclimatise to the textile-free ethos, you find it is a healthier and happier way to sauna. From a bio sauna with mountain herb aromas to the large group sauna where daily infusions take place, this quickly became our favourite ritual. Head upstairs for a range of Ayurvedic and spa treatments including massage and beauty, and there is a special menu just for men.
Local Cuisine
Food at Hubertus is healthy and hearty with freshly made dishes by their renowned head chef. Buffet style breakfast allows you to fit in with any activities or enjoy a lazy morning. Lunch includes hot choices made on demand or choose from the selection laid out and dine outdoors on the balcony or in one of their snug alpine dining rooms. A la carte evening dining is complemented with wines suggested by their sommelier. The area is well-known for its dairy and meat farming; you’ll find a fine-dining feast of excellent meats and cheeses. No to be missed, Karl and Marc host a kitchen cupboard event once a week: a chance to sample local food produce; cheeses, breads and hand-crafted balsamic warmly hosted by Marc, and regional wines infused by Karl’s enthusiasm.
Life in this region has not always been easy, in winter months the roads were unpassable, keeping this area relatively untouched and authentic. You’ll find yourself amongst discerning German and Austrian guests who come back every year for a healthy reset and get back into peak condition. A trip to Hubertus is ideal for couples or a solo retreat with programmes offered throughout the year. You’ll be welcomed by a family with deep roots in the area, passionate about sharing a holistic life. Whilst there’s plenty on offer here, the real secret is to ‘Do Nothing’ for a healthy escape that gives a deeper connection with yourself in nature.
