Always popular over the Christmas period for winter walks with family and friends, Claremont Landscape Garden is turning up the festive charm with its Countdown to Christmas trail celebrating things we love about this special time of year. Visit from Saturday 7 December to Sunday 5 January and find Christmassy installations around the garden, help decorate a Christmas tree and gather your tribe for a festive selfie in our giant Christmas card.
Shaun the Sheep – Find the Flock, Winkworth Arboretum, Godalming, Surrey
Visit Winkworth Arboretum for a festive walk with a difference from Saturday 23 November to Sunday 19 January. This popular National Trust property has teamed up with Wild in Art to bring Aardman’s mischievous Shaun the SheepTM to life on an art trail with a difference. Find twelve super-sized Shaun sculptures, each designed and decorated by talented artists, plus fun games and activities, a children’s carousel, and winter treats. Free with normal entry (charge for carousel rides).
A Gilded Christmas at Ham House and Garden, Richmond, London
Visit Ham House and Garden for A Gilded Christmas from 30 November 2024 until 1 January 2025. Get into the festive spirit with a wander through the impressive 17th-century house, sumptuously decorated in glistening gold, aromatic greenery and twinkling candlelight. A spectacular sugar banquet, made by volunteers, will also be on display in the historic kitchen.
For a fun family day out, enjoy an indoor spotter trail around the house inspired by Ham’s resident cat, Roscoe, and play traditional Christmas games in the maze-like Wilderness area of the garden.
A Christmas Masquerade at Polesden Lacey, Great Bookham, Surrey
Everyone is invited this Christmas, as Polesden Lacey celebrates the festive season in style. From 23 November 2024 until 5 January 2025 (property closed 24 and 25 December), the house will be elaborately dressed as if for a Christmas masquerade ball, inspired by Margaret Greville’s attendance at the famous Devonshire House Ball in 1897. Come and admire the 20ft Christmas tree in the Hall and enjoy immersive scenes through the house.
Outside, ride on a vintage carousel (£3.50 per ride, selected dates) and take part in Grizwald’s First Christmas family trail (£5 per trail, includes special gift to take home).
Christmas at Hatchlands Park, Surrey
Dreaming of a traditional country house Christmas? Come to Hatchlands to see the house beautifully decorated for the festive season. Outside, take part in family activities on the parkland trail, visit the resident donkeys in their cosy stable and enjoy a warming hot chocolate in the cobbled courtyard.
