This gorgeous gastropub makes the perfect stop-in after walks on the common – or a destination in of itself, since it doubles as a hotel. The food is worth it for the visit alone, with a selection of brilliant dishes, from chargrilled pork Tomahawk to roasted chicken breast with confit artichoke, harissa yoghurt, smoked chilli oil and crispy kale.

Tucked away in the Surrey Hills, this gorgeous gastropub dates back to the 16th Century. Having recently been revitalised, it’s rapidly become a favourite spot in the area. The interiors are richly atmospheric, with old oak beams and a roaring fire. Highlights of the excellent menu include Wintershall minted lamb hot pot with hispi cabbage and home-reared banger with colcannon & no-nonsense onion gravy, which have quickly become local favourites.

This brilliant historic pub has recently reopened following a refurb, so it’s the perfect time to pop down there to check out the new look. You can enjoy a whole range of delights on the menu, from pub classics of burgers and roasts to refined dishes of aged bavette steak and Aspall cyder battered haddock.
