Kingston’s riverside rooftop bar has had a winter glow-up… we checked it out
With stunning views of the Thames, Sonnys has been a popular spot for sunset vibes through the summer. But many of us have been curious to see what would happen during the winter months… wonder no longer as we popped along to see how it has been given a seasonal transformation.
Sonnys is from the same folk behind Bone Idyll, further along the river, and Hideaway and Cento Uno, so as you’d expect, the vibe is friendly and fun.
The stairs up to the bar have been festooned with twinkling lights, setting the tone. At the top, there is an open-air terrace with a log burner in the middle so you can cosy up, sipped mulled wine and enjoy the views of the river.
Inside is warm and cosy, the transparent window coverings keep the heat in, and it’s a great spot for an early evening cocktail. A DJ gets the party started Thursday to Saturday, and on our visit, there was a wide range of ages and group sizes, all in the mood for a night out. The long bar has a glitterball and orb lights and there are faux furs draped on the chairs and benches all adding to the festive feel.
A pizza menu offers everything from the usual margherita to a pizza with potato and pancetta. We went for an nduja and the classic margherita. The bases are perfectly thin and surrounded by pillowy crusts with the right amount of charring from the oven. Divine. We washed them down with two pints of Brixton Pale Ale.
This will be a great place for winter – we look forward to heading back after some Christmas shopping for a Winter Margarita or Gingerbread Sour from the cocktail menu, and hopefully grab a coveted spot by the fire.
