Why Pilates is So Powerful for Peri and Menopausal Women
Why Pilates is So Powerful for Peri and Menopausal Women

There’s a lot that no one tells you about your 40s and 50s. Your body starts doing things you didn’t sign up for – softening in places you used to feel strong, struggling to build (or keep) muscle, sleep going out the window, moods all over the place, and a general sense of “what is happening to me?”
I see it all the time – women who were once confident in their bodies now feeling like they’re battling against them. And when you add perimenopause or menopause into the mix, it’s no wonder so many feel overwhelmed or stuck.
But here’s the thing: your body isn’t broken – it just needs a new approach. And for so many women I work with, that’s where Pilates comes in.
Strength That Supports You – Not Just the Aesthetics
From around age 30, women lose 3–5% of their muscle mass every decade. That number increases more rapidly after menopause. It’s one of the main reasons I see women in midlife feeling weaker, softer, and more prone to injury – and why strength training becomes non-negotiable.
Pilates is incredibly effective at building that strength – not just in the major muscle groups but deep within the core and stabilisers. It helps you move better, stand taller, and feel stronger in day-to-day life. Whether it’s lifting your kids, carrying shopping, or simply walking into a room with confidence – it all comes back to strength.
And unlike other methods, it does this without thrashing your body.

Bone Health, Hormones – and Why HIIT Isn’t Always the Answer
I cannot stress enough how important weight-bearing movement is for maintaining bone density – especially as oestrogen levels fall. The SDP Method, which is a dynamic blend of classical Pilates and functional strength training, weaves in resistance work using weights, bands, sliders, and magic circles to challenge the body in a smart, supportive way.
And because it’s low-impact, it’s ideal for women with niggling joints – knees, hips, backs – who want to keep moving but don’t want to feel broken afterwards.
But it’s not just about what we’re building – it’s also about what we’re avoiding. A lot of women turn to high-intensity workouts in an effort to shift weight or “get back” to where they once were. The problem? As we age, that kind of high-stress, high-impact training can spike cortisol levels. And when cortisol stays high, the body goes into fight-or-flight mode – clinging to fat, disrupting sleep, and increasing inflammation.
Pilates, done right, gives you the burn without the stress. You work hard – but you leave feeling energised, not utterly exhausted. That’s the sweet spot.
Mood, Focus and Finding Your Centre Again
It’s not just the physical stuff. The brain fog, anxiety, poor sleep and short fuse are real – and Pilates can help here too. The focus it requires brings you into your body and out of your head. You’re moving with intention, connecting breath to movement, and pressing pause on the noise.
Clients tell me they arrive feeling wired or worn out, and leave feeling calm, strong, and like themselves again. That’s not a coincidence. Movement is medicine – especially in midlife.
It’s Not About Bouncing Back – It’s About Moving Forward
I say this to my clients all the time – this phase isn’t about bouncing back, it’s about powering forward. Pilates is the perfect partner for that. You don’t need to be flexible. You don’t need to know what you’re doing. You just need to start – and keep showing up.
There is so much strength waiting to be found – not just in your body, but in your mindset. You don’t need to shrink. You get to grow.
Final Thoughts
If you’re in your 40s or 50s and feeling like your body is changing faster than you can keep up with – you are not alone. But you are not powerless either.
Pilates offers a smart, sustainable, and seriously effective way to build strength, boost energy, and feel like you again. It’s not a quick fix – it’s an investment in your future self.
