Guitars are still one of the most popular instruments on the planet. The fact that playing the guitar is relatively easy has a big part in that, but the guitar is also a very portable instrument and you can play literally every genre of music on it. You can learn guitar by going on lessons, but online you can find loads of tutorials as well.
The guitar
It’s a misconception that a guitar has to be expensive if you want it to sound good. A Second hand guitar is an excellent choice. Go guitar-shopping with someone who knows their guitars and knows what they have to sound like. Try the guitar in your hand. How does it feel? Do you feel like it would be comfortable to play this guitar?
Plectrums
You don’t need a plectrum right away, but it can come in handy when your fingers are hurting very quickly when you are practising on your guitar. Be aware of the fact that you don’t want to rely on your plectrum too much. You’ll need to develop thicker skin on your fingers to become a durable guitarist, but now and then it’s a relieve to use the plectrum. A plectrum can also be really helpful when you want to improvise or pluck or just play single strings.
The capo
Just like the plectrum, you won’t need a capo right away, but it can be really helpful when you are playing a lot of chords. When you want to play in a different key than you are used to, you can put the capo on the guitar to transpose your playing to that key. It can make things way easier, but at the same time, there is value in knowing how to play different keys without the capo.
The bag
The guitar is a very portable instrument, but transporting your guitar needs to happen in a safe way. Make sure you have a bag of good quality to carry your guitar to your lessons or maybe even your next gig.
Something to tune your guitar
One of the downsides of the guitar is that it has to be tuned endlessly. Nowadays most tuning devices are digital and you actually don’t really need to buy a physical one anymore (though it can be helpful). Loads of guitarists in 2025 tune their guitar with an app on their phone. There are loads of them and most of them are even free to use.
