Vibrant flavours at Bombay Delight

We tried out a special menu at the Wimbledon favourite

Local Wimbledon restaurant Bombay Delight never disappoints. They’ve been serving up delicious and authentic Indian cuisine since they first opened in 2022, all in an elegant, warm and convivial atmosphere with service that truly goes above and beyond.

I was excited upon my most recent visit to try out their Maharashtra Food Festival menu, a special offering celebrating the vibrant flavours of the Maharashtra region. Maharashtrian cuisine is known for its bold and distinctive flavours, with staples of wheat, rice, lentils and fruit.

To begin, we sipped mango lychee cocktails, which were gorgeously sweet and flowery, accompanied by a selection of poppadoms made from various flours alongside light and tasty dips.

The Maharashtra menu is extensive and filled with so many interesting dishes it is hard to choose. We settled on starters of Hirvya Watancha paneer tikka, slices of paneer marinated with ginger, garlic and stone-blended green herbs, and Satari mutton chops flavoured with a blend of Satara district spices, slowly cooked in a tandoori oven. The paneer was wonderfully flavoured with light, fresh flavouring, and the mutton was gloriously succulent and smoky.

For the main courses, we were tempted by the kala chicken, a spicy chicken dish from Satara, and the vegetable Maratha, a dish made from paneer and mixed vegetable dumplings in a masala-infused sauce. The chicken was wonderful, cooked to an ever-so-slightly chargrilled taste, with a bold and smoky sauce that carried a brilliant depth of flavour. The vegetable dumplings were equally delicious, coated beautifully in the tomato masala curry.

We also thoroughly enjoyed a serving of Ambemohar rice, a traditional rice variety sourced exclusively from Maharashtra, with a wondrously aromatic mango blossom flavour, and a Puran Poli – a Maharashtrian sweet flatbread made with flour, lentils, jaggery and cardamom.

We finished with dessert: a serving of creamy pineapple ice cream, a heavenly sweet treat and the perfect way to top off such a fabulous feast.

A visit to Bombay Delight is always a treat, from the love and care put into every dish to the warm and hospitable service. It was brilliant to get the chance to try this menu, and I recommend it to anyone who is looking for a special evening filled with fine food.
