Review: Sunday roast at Mr Porter
Review: Sunday roast at Mr Porter
An exceptional lunch in the heart of Mayfair
By Ellie Holmes
Nothing beats a good Sunday roast, but often it’s hard to navigate your way through the options and choices of venues offering a decent cut of meat or vegetarian equivalent.
Often we go to our local pub, and historically we aren’t that good at travelling afar in search of a traditional roast.
But our trip to Mr Porter in Mayfair called this logic into question.
As we went into Central London, the museums and parks were buzzing with tourists across the capital. As we ventured up to Hyde Park Corner the crowds cleared and the sun was shining. It was the most peaceful and tranquil I have ever known the capital.
With the light gleaming through the autumnal trees we had a walk in the park and then found the golden welcoming door to Mr Porter.
Having opened in April 2025, the decoration and ambience of this underground restaurant is sophisticated but welcoming.
We sat and had a drink and some olives in the bar, which definitely didn’t immediately feel like a place where we would have a roast: the lighting and music was more upbeat and vibrant to a pub and that contrast was refreshing.

After a glass of cold and fizzing Nyetimber, we headed into the restaurant which had similar shimmering shades of gold and finery as the bar, but with lower seating and more of a dining feel.
Service in both arenas was perfect and we were transitioned seamlessly from one to the other.
My Mother and I both went for beef. In this meat mecca, it would be rude not to… and we weren’t disappointed with what can only be described as the best steak we had had in years – possibly ever.
Sharing a sirloin and a bone in fillet – the meat was cooked to perfection and melted in the mouth with sumptuous flavours and smoking. There was the also option of a tomahawk, lady mignon, rib eye, sirloin, bone-in fillet Japanese wagyu, rib eye on the bone, or New York strip.
We shared the sides which were an array of glazed parsnips, roasted potatoes, heritage carrots, braised cabbage and homemade Yorkshire pudding, and each and element was stunning in its own right.
All of this was washed down with a light bottle of red selected by the sommelier.
What’s more, they even provided some pasta and veggies for my 7-year-old who isn’t quite yet into roast beef.
As we left, the music and DJ decks were being warmed up, which created a buzzing, energised yet gentle atmosphere. Mr Porter is known for cocktails and beats, and transcends the ordinary by combining the precision of a modern steakhouse with the ambiance of a high-end bar.
Our visit was a true lesson that it really is worth going further afield to find one of the best Sunday roasts in London, both service and food were impeccable.
