The AELTC puts forward its argument
In response to our interview with Save Wimbledon Park, the AELTC issued the following statement:
“There will be a measurable biodiversity net gain as a result of these proposals, this is endorsed by expert organisations and backed up with over 1,000 hours of ecological surveys.
The London Wildlife Trust support our proposals and their statement on the plans is, ““having had the opportunity to extensively review the AELTC project documentation and for the Trust’s staff to visit the site on many occasions and understand the context and ambition of the proposals, I can confirm that LWT fully supports this ambitious project….”
It is also the case that there will be more green, open, publicly accessible land as a result of our proposals, than there has ever been in the local area.
Far from decreasing the amount of parkland, there will be a 27 acre increase on what has been a private members golf course for well over a century. A 23 acre southern parkland will be freely accessible year round on the same opening times as the existing Wimbledon Park, and a 4 acre northern parkland will be accessible outside of The Championships period, with the option to use this space for parkrun, fitness classes and farmers market style events.
Wimbledon Park itself will be enhanced with a new entrance, new toilet facilities, a new play park, a new watersports centre, amongst other improvements.
