Taking control: 5 tips to enhance your life
Wimbledon writer Dr. Coco Novak, author of ‘Single, And Too Tired To Mingle’ on the five ways you can improve your life
Sometimes, our life seems to be stuck in a rut. Difficult relationships, stagnant careers, and mundane routines can leave us feeling trapped in a never-ending cycle. This is not the life we envisioned, but how do we change it?
Let’s dive into five practical tips to take control of your life, inspired by my Fearless seminar:
- Focus on the Positives
Take a piece of paper and write down the things that are going well in your life. Start with the basics: Do you have a roof over your head? Food on the table? A supportive friend or family member? It’s important to recognize and appreciate these positives, no matter how small they may seem. When we focus on what’s going right, it becomes easier to tackle what’s not.
- Identify Areas for Improvement
Next, identify the areas of your life that need improvement. Don’t be too hard on yourself, but be honest. Write down the aspects that are causing you disappointment or frustration. Recognizing these areas is the first step towards making positive changes.
- Prioritize and Create an Action Plan
Choose the top three areas that are most urgent or important to improve. For each area, list five action points that can help you move forward. This turns vague goals into a concrete to-do list. Start taking action on these points and track your progress!
- Overcome Fear of Failure
Fear of failure often holds us back. What if we apply for our dream job and don’t get it? What if we go on a date and it doesn’t work out? Remember, every rejection is a step closer to success. Reframe failures as learning opportunities. Once you know yourself and what you truly want, you’ll find that doors start to open. The key really is to persevere, and don’t give up just because things get tough.
- Align with Your Values
Understanding your core values is crucial for a fulfilling life. Ask yourself: What are your values? What truly matters to you? For example, my three pillars of happiness are ensuring my kids are okay, enjoying my work, and having a good relationship with my partner. Assess your own pillars and work on strengthening them. If something feels off, write down ways to improve it and don’t hesitate to seek help if needed. Writing really does help visualise solutions.
Final Thoughts
Changes don’t happen overnight. I went from depressing jobs to my dream job—becoming a tennis coach—despite everyone around me thinking I was nuts! Despite my academic background, being on a tennis court was the only thing that made me happy. Last year I wanted to write a book and in the beginning of this year I wanted host my own podcast (with no prior knowledge!). And somehow did it! I am now working towards being a (paid) public speaker – it is a difficult challenge, but I’ve made the first move by taking a weekend long course and joining a speaker’s academy.
