Choosing the right hairstyle for you

Choosing the right hairstyle for you

By Gina Conway

So, you’re thinking about switching up your hairstyle. Maybe you’ve been sporting the same ‘do’ since high school, or perhaps you’ve been scrolling Instagram and seeing all the fabulous makeovers and turning green with envy.  No matter the reason, choosing a new hairstyle can be quite the adventure – fun and exciting in fact!

I know choosing the right hairstyle for you can be confusing when you need to consider all of the factors that add up to the perfect design for you. But fear not, I’m here to offer some key advice on how to pick the best hairstyle for your unique texture and facial features.

Let’s talk hair texture. Are you blessed with luscious curls that are the envy of all your friends, or do you possess frizzy unruly hair that you have just given up on taming? Or maybe you wake up every morning with hair so straight it puts rulers to shame? The key here is understanding what kind of texture Mother Nature bestowed upon you and working with it, not against it. But truly gorgeous hair does need some maintaining and some time to create the look, but rest assured, its worth it. You too will soon be the envy of all your amigos if you commit to some basic rules.

If You’ve Got Curls:

Congratulations! You’ve got yourself a head full of personality right there. When it comes to curly hair, finding the right style means embracing those luxurious twists and turns rather than trying to tame them into submission. Opt for layers that are strategically placed to enhance those curls and add some oomph to your old school tepee shape.

Consider going for a shoulder-length cut or even a bit longer. Long layers can help weigh down the hair, preventing it from turning into an 80’s perm look, creating a more modern frame for your face.  My hottest tip for you “Curly Girls” is choosing the right product, and using about twice as much as you think you need applying it on soaking wet hair and combing it through before letting it dry naturally or using a diffuser.

If You’ve Got Straight Hair:

Those who have it hate it, those who do not, covet it… Fear not, straight-haired friend! Your hair may lack natural volume and texture, but that just means it’s time to get creative with your cut and styling.

Consider adding some layers for movement and dimension. A long bob or a textured lob can work wonders for adding some interest to straight locks without requiring too much maintenance. And hey, beach waves aren’t just reserved for mermaids – grab yourself a good texturizing spray and embrace that effortlessly tousled look.

Now that we’ve got our textures covered, let’s move on to facial features. We all have different shapes and angles going on up there, so it’s important to find a hairstyle that complements what your mama gave you.

First off: the oval face shape. If this is you, congratulations are in order because pretty much everything looks great on an oval face! You lucky duck!

For those of us with round faces: avoid overly rounded cuts as they may make your face look even fuller. Instead, try opting for styles with longer layers and centre partings and my special party trick here is a short mini fringe. No wider than eyebrow to eyebrow. This can make your face appear to elongate and adds that youth vibe we all longing for.

Got a heart-shaped visage? Balance out wider foreheads by going for side-swept bangs or chin-length bobs – which will draw your eye toward your best features. Stay away from A-line (longer in front) cuts. Set the layers up to jump and kick for volume creating a width where you chin resides.

And last but certainly not least: square faces! Soften up strong jawlines with curly or wavy styles  and add some feature pieces that break up the width and highlight your lovely cheekbones!  Steer clear of blunt cuts that sit at chin length. Go at or below your shoulders for the most flattering effect.

Now listen here ladies, while these guidelines can certainly help point you in the right direction when choosing a new hairstyle, don’t forget about one crucial element here – confidence! Whether you choose to rock wild curls or sleek straight locks is entirely up to you, after all, owning whatever style makes YOU feel like the fabulous human being you are is what truly matters most.

So go forth my friends – armed with this newfound wisdom – and conquer those salon chairs like the champions I know you are! And hey – worst case scenario? It’ll grow back eventually… right?

Happy styling!
