Michael Maloney to star as Poirot

The actor has been cast as Hercule Poirot in Richmond Theatre’s new production of Murder on the Orient Express

Michael Maloney is set to star as Agatha Christie’s most famous detective in a new production of Murder and the Orient Express by Fiery Angel and Lucy Bailey. Ken Ludwig’s adaptation of Christie’s novel will be brought to life at Richmond Theatre this November.

Maloney is perhaps best known for his roles as Henry Stafford in the television series The White Queen and Edward Heath in The Crown. His other notable film and television roles include Belfast, Iron Lady, Young Victoria, and Truly, Madly, Deeply.

The actor is no stranger to the stage; his many roles for the Royal Shakespeare Company include turns as Romeo, King Lear‘s Edgar and Henry IV‘s Prince Hal. His other notable roles include Cromwell in Light Shining in Buckinghamshire and Lewis Carroll in Alice’s Adventures Under Ground. This will be the first time he steps into the boots of Poirot, following in the footsteps of many legendary actors before him on both screen and stage, from David Suchet to Kenneth Branagh and John Malkovich.

Maloney said of playing Poirot: “I am very excited and honoured to be joining a long line of extraordinary actors who have taken on the role of Hercule Poirot and I hope I can be so, too. To work with such a talented director as Lucy Bailey and with top producers Fiery Angel is a gift and a privilege. Here’s to Orient Express hurtling through your town or city soon!”

Lucy Bailey has previously directed Witness for the Prosecution, And Then There Were None and The Other Boleyn Girl. Her production of Murder on the Orient Express will begin touring in September 2024 and will come to Richmond Theatre from 5-9 November.

Further casting is set to be announced soon.
